The MiniMed 780G is the latest generation of insulin pump from Medtronic, offering even more precise blood sugar control than previous models. This pump is designed to make life easier for people with type 1 diabetes by providing advanced technology, automated insulin delivery, and improved safety.

Main differences from previous models:

  1. Improved automation and adaptability:
    • The MiniMed 780G uses Medtronic’s Advanced Hybrid Closed Loop (AHCL) technology, which automatically adjusts insulin delivery based on real-time changes in glucose levels. This helps keep blood sugar levels within target ranges, reducing the risk of both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
    • Compared to the 640G, which used the SmartGuard system to stop insulin delivery when glucose levels approach a critically low threshold, the 780G goes even further – it not only stops, but also automatically resumes and adjusts insulin delivery.
  2. More accurate target glucose control:
    • The 780G allows the user to select a target glucose level starting at 5.5 mmol/L – lower than the 640G and 720G models, offering the opportunity to more precisely tailor therapy to individual needs.
  3. More intuitive user display:
    • The pump is equipped with a simpler and more user-friendly screen that is easy to see and intuitive to use compared to older models.

SafeGuard feature: how does it work?

The SafeGuard feature in the MiniMed 780G system includes automated insulin adjustments and preventative actions. It works as follows:

  1. Automatic insulin adjustment:
    • The pump continuously analyzes sensor data and predicts changes in glucose levels over the next few hours. Based on these calculations, SafeGuard adjusts both basal insulin and automatic bolus adjustments.
  2. Security system:
    • If sugar levels approach a critically high or low limit, SafeGuard reacts to ensure stability, for example by increasing or decreasing the insulin dose.
  3. Automatic resumption after insulin suspension:
    • If the pump has previously stopped insulin delivery, it will automatically resume once a safe glucose level is predicted.

The MiniMed 780G pump is compatible with Guardian™ 4 CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) sensors. These sensors measure glucose levels in real time, providing a reading every 5 minutes
