For women’s health and well-being – strengthening the pelvic floor muscles with vaginal cones
The pelvic floor muscles play a vital role in a woman's health, well-being and quality of life. These muscles support the pelvic organs – the bladder, uterus and bowels – and help provide bladder control, stability during daily movements and also affect intimate comfort. However, during various stages of life, such as after pregnancy and childbirth, with age or due to reduced physical activity, the pelvic floor muscles can become weaker.
The functionality and strength of these muscles can also be improved by training them. Vaginal cones are special aids designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. When used correctly and regularly, they can help improve muscle tone, reduce the risk of urinary incontinence, and promote a woman's overall well-being. In addition to the medical benefits, pelvic floor muscle training can also have a positive effect on intimate life.
What are vaginal cones?
Vaginal cones are a medical device designed to train and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. They are small, cone-shaped weights that are inserted into the vagina to stimulate reflex contraction of the muscles. When the cone is in the vagina, the body automatically activates the pelvic floor muscles to hold it in place. This mechanism helps to train the muscles naturally. Typically, a set of vaginal cones consists of several cones with different weights, which allows you to gradually increase the load and effectively train the muscles.
Who are vaginal cones suitable for?
The pelvic floor muscles support several important organs, including the bladder, uterus, and bowels. When these muscles become weak, various symptoms can occur, such as urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. Vaginal cones are used both preventively and therapeutically to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles:
- for the prevention and treatment of stress urinary incontinence
- for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles
- for training the perineal muscles
- for restoring muscle tone after childbirth (no sooner than 6 - 8 weeks after childbirth, in case of childbirth complications only according to doctor's instructions)
- rehabilitation after genital prolapse correction surgeries – only on doctor's orders, during the appropriate rehabilitation phase
- for the prevention of pelvic floor dysfunction
When are vaginal cones not recommended?
Although vaginal cones are a safe and widely used exercise tool, there are situations when they should not be used without consulting a doctor:
- immediately after gynecological surgeries
- in the first weeks after giving birth
- if you have a vaginal or pelvic infection
- if you have pelvic or vaginal pain
- if there is bleeding of unknown origin
Use after operations
Vaginal cones are sometimes used in the rehabilitation process after prolapse surgery. However, this is always only done after the tissues have fully healed and a doctor or physiotherapist has recommended starting pelvic floor muscle exercises.
This means that the cones are not intended for use immediately after surgery, but rather during the later stage of recovery, when it is necessary to restore the function of the pelvic floor muscles.
How to use vaginal cones correctly?
To get the best results, it is important to follow the correct application technique.
1. Hygiene - the cone should be washed with warm water and soap before use.
2. Insertion of the cone - the cone is inserted into the vagina to a depth of approximately 3–4 cm, similar to a tampon.
3. Choosing the right weight - it is recommended to start the workout with a cone that can be held in the vagina with great difficulty. This ensures that the muscles have to work to hold the cone.
Once you can hold a particular cone for 10–15 minutes for several days in a row, you can move on to a heavier weight.
How is pelvic floor muscle training done?
Cones are usually used for 10–15 minutes at a time, at least 1–2 times a day.
You don't have to sit or lie down during your workout. In fact, it's more effective to:
- to walk
- to stand
- to perform light daily tasks
This is because gravity forces the pelvic muscles to work harder to hold the cone in place.
It is important to understand that the cones are not intended for passive use only. A better effect can be achieved if you consciously contract and relax the pelvic floor muscles during the workout. In addition, the duration of the workout should not be exceeded (longer than 20 minutes), this will cause muscle fatigue, but will not give better results.
Usually, the first improvements can be noticed after about 4 weeks if the training is done regularly.
Added benefit – improved sex life
In addition to the medical benefits, pelvic floor muscle training can also have a positive impact on your intimate life. Stronger pelvic muscles can improve vaginal muscle tone, increase sensitivity during intercourse, improve blood circulation in the pelvic area, and help you better control vaginal muscle contractions.
This can lead to more intense sensations for both the woman and her partner. That's why pelvic floor muscle exercises are often recommended for improving sexual health.
